EDGE Sporting Management driver Callum Voisin made a superb return to the Porsche Carrera Cup Great Britain Championship after the summer break, producing a commanding victory and another podium finish at Thruxton to strengthen his position at the top of the championship standings.
The Century Motorsport by Rosland Gold driver converted a dominant pole position into his fifth victory of the season before fighting from ninth on the grid to finish fourth overall and third in the Pro category in race two, ensuring he maintained his remarkable record of standing on the podium in every race this season.
Following a break of almost eight weeks, the Porsche Carrera Cup Great Britain Championship resumed at the UK’s fastest circuit, Thruxton in Hampshire, supporting the Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship. Voisin arrived full of confidence after an impressive run of performances in Porsche Carrera Cup Italia and immediately demonstrated that momentum by producing an outstanding qualifying performance.
The EDGE Sporting Management driver claimed pole position for race one by an emphatic two tenths of a second – a huge margin in a one-make championship around a circuit where more than 70 percent of the lap is completed at full throttle and the field is traditionally separated by the finest of margins.
Voisin was also the fastest driver in the second qualifying session and initially secured a second pole position on the road. However, a track limits infringement resulted in his lap being deleted, relegating him to ninth on the grid for race two and leaving him with plenty of work to do on Sunday afternoon.
Race one proved to be a masterclass in controlled, front-running performance. Voisin made an excellent start from pole position and held the lead into the dauntingly fast opening corner before immediately settling into a relentless rhythm. Consistently quick lap times gradually allowed him to edge clear of the chasing pack, with the championship leader never looking under serious pressure as he cruised to his fifth victory of the season by just over three seconds.
The second encounter presented an altogether different challenge, with Voisin beginning from ninth on the grid following his qualifying penalty. Undeterred, he produced another mature and measured drive, carving his way through the field on the opening lap to move into sixth place while following Century Motorsport teammate Isaac Phelps through the early traffic.
The pair ran nose-to-tail for several laps before Voisin executed a clean, decisive pass on Phelps on lap 11 to move into fifth position. With clear air ahead, he immediately closed on the driver in fourth and completed another late-race overtake to secure fourth place overall. Importantly, that result also delivered third place in the Pro category, extending his perfect run of podium finishes in every race contested so far this season.
The excellent points haul means Voisin departs Thruxton as the Porsche Carrera Cup Great Britain championship leader, holding a 12-point advantage as the title battle enters its second half.
Following the weekend, Voisin thanked Century Motorsport by Rosland Gold, the Porsche Junior Programme – for which he is the UK’s nominated young driver – and EDGE Sporting Management for their continued support throughout the season.
