EDGE Sporting Management driver Callum Voisin produced two excellent recovery drives to claim fourth and third-place finishes during the penultimate round of the Porsche Carrera Cup Italia at the Misano World Circuit.
The current Porsche Carrera Cup GB championship leader is dovetailing his British campaign with selected appearances in the highly competitive Italian series, driving for Ombra Racing. Having already delivered several impressive performances in the championship, the Porsche GB Junior arrived at Misano determined to continue that strong form.
Voisin faced a difficult start to the weekend during qualifying. With little separating the drivers around the technically demanding Italian circuit, he was unable to maximise his ultimate pace and qualified outside the top ten in 12th place for the opening race.
Faced with plenty of work to do, Voisin responded with a superbly controlled recovery drive. Combining excellent speed with patience, controlled aggression and intelligent racecraft, the young British driver steadily worked his way through the closely matched field of Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars.
Voisin picked off his rivals one by one as he climbed towards the leading group. Although the two front-running cars had already broken clear, he continued his charge and came close to securing the final podium position before ultimately taking the chequered flag in fourth place. Gaining eight positions from 12th on the grid represented an excellent result after the disappointment of qualifying.
Voisin lined up seventh for race two and immediately gained a position with a strong start. The opening lap featured plenty of close-quarters racing and contact throughout the tightly packed field, but he remained firmly in contention as the race began to settle.
By the end of the second lap, Voisin was running seventh but had closed onto the cars battling immediately ahead. He took full advantage of their defensive driving and loss of momentum to move into fifth place on the following tour.
Voisin struck again midway through the next lap, executing a fantastic move down the inside to claim fourth. The battling behind had allowed the leading three cars to establish an advantage, with the final podium position around 1.5 seconds further up the road.
With 22 minutes remaining, Voisin began producing a sequence of fast and consistent laps to close the gap. His relentless pace brought him to within two-tenths of third place with 15 minutes left on the clock.
The decisive move arrived shortly afterwards. With 12-and-a-half minutes remaining, the EDGE driver found his way past and secured the final podium position.
Voisin remained in third until a late safety-car intervention, caused by an incident with approximately five minutes remaining, was followed by a red flag during the closing minute. The race was subsequently declared, confirming Voisin’s place on the podium.
After a challenging qualifying session, fourth and third-place finishes represented an excellent recovery for Voisin, whose speed, composure and racecraft were once again on full display during a highly competitive weekend in Italy.
