EDGE Management driver Callum Voisin took his maiden victory in the FIA Formula Three Feature Race around the iconic Spa Francorchamps track yesterday. Voisin, who had secured an emphatic pole position on Friday afternoon, dominated the race dealing with a greasy track and multiple safety car restarts to take the flag and the top step of the podium as his own – his debut in the championship.
Off the back of a strong Sprint Race for the team on Saturday in which Voisin took seventh, attention turned fully to the Feature Race where Voisin lined up on pole. And, as is often the case, greasy conditions following rain yesterday and overnight greeted the team on the grid. However slicks were the order of the day, for the entire field as blue skies threatened to break overhead.
Off the line Voisin held his nerve and looked good as the field pulled around the opening couple of corners, however Sebastian Montoya closed in from behind at Les Combes and the two ran wide avoiding a full blown collision. The battle between the pair continued over the next lap however Voisin once again placed his car perfectly before a safety car neutralised the race.
Voisin left it until the last moment to launch up to speed in a move that perfectly placed him crossing the line and keeping him out of the danger zone to Montoya behind. However, as is often the way, safety cars breed safety cars and another was soon on track following contact between Loake and Sophia Florsch. Loake was able to continue; pulling himself out of the gravel trap and joining the back of the field.
Once again Voisin restarted perfectly using a different tactic to his previous restart – however yielding the same result to pull a gap again over Montoya. One final safety car came out just a lap later leaving a one lap dash to the chequered flag.
As had been the story of the race, Voisin kept his head, restarted perfectly, and maintained the lead to build a gap and take his debut victory in the competitive championship. The result sees Rodin Motorsport take their first victory in the FIA Formula Three championship.
Voisin said of the result, “Extremely happy, first win for me, first win for the team, can’t thank everybody enough for everything that they have done, the hard work and see you guys in a couple of weeks in Monza.”
The final round of the championship will take place after a well-earned summer break at Monza at the end of August.
