MIKEY PORTER – HUNGARORING RACE REPORT – INTERNATIONAL GT OPEN ROUND 4
The fourth round of the 2025 International GT Open Championship took place at the Hungaroring Grand Prix circuit in Hungary. EDGE Sporting Management driver Mikey Porter, racing with Optimum Motorsport, arrived aiming to consolidate the momentum from a strong start to the season.
Porter immediately set the tone in qualifying, placing his McLaren 720S GT3 Evo in an impressive P3 on the grid for Race 1—just under a tenth off the front row and the top-qualifying McLaren across the field. His teammate, Zac Meakin, who is still gaining experience in GT3 machinery, qualified P16 for Race 2 on Sunday.
Saturday’s Race 1 proved to be a standout moment for the young British duo. In a 40-lap contest that lasted just over an hour and ten minutes, Porter and Meakin executed a clean and composed drive, navigating traffic and strategy with maturity. The result was a superb P2 overall and in the GT3 category—marking another podium finish for Porter in his 2025 campaign and a significant boost for Optimum Motorsport.
Sunday’s Race 2 presented a greater challenge. With Meakin starting the race and handing the car over to Porter from P16, the team also had to serve a five-second success penalty due to their Saturday podium. When Porter rejoined the race after the pit stop, he found himself down in P20 with just under 30 minutes to go.
Unfazed by the task, Porter delivered a sensational comeback drive. Carving his way through the field with measured aggression and consistent pace, he climbed 11 positions to finish in P9 by the time the chequered flag fell—another impressive showing that underlined the team’s speed and racecraft across the weekend.
Reflecting on the Hungarian weekend, Porter said:
“A really positive weekend for myself, Zac and the team. We had much improved and consistent pace compared to previous weekends where we’ve had some good results, but they’ve seemed harder fought. So, we’re extremely pleased with the progress and really looking forward to the rest of the season taking this pace with us. I’d like to thank Optimum Motorsport, McLaren and especially EDGE Sporting Management for the opportunity.”
With two solid results and another podium to their name, Porter and Meakin continue to gain momentum as they move into the second half of the GT Open season.
