Charlie Fagg – Super GT Fuji Race Report – Round 4 2025
Round 4 of the 2025 Autobacs Super GT Championship took place at the world-famous Fuji Raceway in the shadow of Mount Fuji in Oyama, Japan. EDGE Sporting Management driver Charlie Fagg, driving his D-Station Aston Martin Vantage GT3, was looking for redemption after a late puncture whilst in the lead demoted him to second place at the second round of the championship also held at Fuji Raceway.
It was the first time for a while that the championship held a sprint format weekend. What this entailed was one driver would qualify and do all of race 1 on Saturday and one driver would do qualifying and all of race 2 on Sunday, as opposed to the more traditional GT style of pit stops and driver swaps. The team nominated Charlie to take part in Saturday’s qualifying and race 1.
After some incredibly high temperatures in the Japanese summer, the air temperature was nearly 40 degrees and the team struggled a little in testing, making a lot of setup changes for qualifying. Luckily this paid off and Charlie qualified in 4th place, less than 3 tenths from pole position, and was confident of his race pace going into the one-hour sprint.
Again, the race was held under extreme temperatures, and tyre degradation and tyre life would play a big part in the outcome. Charlie stalked the leaders and managed to take the lead of the race on lap 25 of 35, pulling out a small gap before tyre degradation really kicked in, forcing him to nurse the car home. The car that finished in 2nd place, a Mercedes AMG, kept him honest and crossed the line less than 7 tenths behind the Edge driver at the finish. It was, however, redemption and their first win of the season, and fantastic to get that win at Fuji after such disappointment last time out.
His teammate Tomonobu Fujii repeated the feat on Sunday with a pole position and a win in race 2, making it a double sweep of race wins. Leaving Fuji Raceway, Charlie and his teammate sit 2nd in the GT300 championship, just 4.5 points off the championship leaders with all to play for at the halfway stage.
Shortly after the weekend, Fagg thanked the team and his teammate for both an excellent car and driving performance, and thanked EDGE Sporting Management for the opportunity. He is really looking forward to the rest of the season and being in the championship hunt.
