George Gamble – Porsche Carrera Cup GB – Rd.15 & 16 – Brands Hatch GP – October ‘24
The Final Round of the Porsche Carrera Cup GB championship was held at the World-famous Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit in Kent.
EDGE driver George Gamble went into the weekend leading the championship by 5 points but there were 4 drivers still in with a chance of taking the title.
Driving his Rosland Gold by Century Motorsport 911 GT3 Cup Car, George qualified P6 in Saturday’s qualification in preparation for the crucial championship showdown on Sunday.
It was a frantic first lap for race one which saw Gamble have a careful first lap to avoid trouble. At the end of lap one he held station in P6 but was right behind the lead group with a small gap behind.
The pace of the lead group was very close and competitive and everyone held station for the first five laps. Then a huge moment at the start of lap five which saw race leader, Wil Martin, who was effectively leading the championship at that stage of the race lock up and go into the gravel at Paddock Hill bend, effectively ending his championship. This promoted Gamble to 5th place. A lengthy safety car period ensued which saw a shortened end to the race and Gamble in P5.
Going into the final race of the year George was two points off the championship lead for a last race shootout. Starting P6 in wet conditions, he got upto fifth place by the end of Lap one with his wet weather pace looking exceptionally good. A move into paddock Hill bend on lap four saw him up into P4. Just half a lap later he was up into third and on a real charge. The fastest lap of the race was done by Gamble on the end of lap six which put him to within a second of the top two.
By the end of lap eight he was on the back of the leaders as a dry line faintly started to begin to form the overtake for second place occurred at the end of lap eight and his pace in these conditions was blistering and by the end of the next lap was only one tenth of a second behind the leader.
At the end of lap 10 the crucial move was made via a cutback pass on the exit of clearways which put George in the race lead and the championship lead, a position that he never surrendered finishing 5.4 seconds ahead of the rest of the field to claim the Porsche Carrera Cup GB championship.
Shortly after the Championship Win Gamble Commented:
